Before The End: Jim Morrison

Directed by Jeff Finn, the documentary presents itself as an investigative examination of The Doors’ frontman’s final days, yet it feels more like a séance than a scholarly inquiry. Reviving the familiar rumor that Morrison faked his own death, Finn and his lineup of interviewees appear convinced that the “official story” is flawed—but offer little beyond speculative embellishment on an already myth-saturated narrative. To his credit, Finn uncovers rare archival footage and interviews that humanize Morrison, portraying him as more than a spectral icon of rock history. Particularly unsettling are accounts alleging that Morrison endured sexual abuse by his father from the age of four.
